Firepits & Fireplaces

outdoor fireplaceWhy Fire Pits Are “Backyard Magic”.

What is the best way to extend a beautiful Spring or Fall evening? Nothing beats an outdoor fire pit! We are all naturally drawn to a crackling fire especially when there’s a chill in the air. Gathering around a warm fire is a relaxing and comforting way to spend time with friends and family. Studies show that fire pits have become extremely popular with homeowners over the last few years and are one of the most requested features when building a new home.

What Are The Benefits Of Adding A Backyard Fire Pit?

• Extends your outdoor living experience by letting you stay outdoors longer into the Spring and Fall seasons.

• Adds ambiance, contrast and beauty to your backyard landscape.

• Provides warmth and a place to gather with friends and family when you want your evening to last a bit longer.

• Wood fire pits can be used as an alternative to grilling and for kids to roast marshmallows.

• Is the perfect compliment to a water feature such as a waterfall, koi pond or swimming pool.

• Adds value to your home if you ever decide to sell.

What Are The Options When Adding A Fire Pit?

The two most popular fuel types when considering a fire pit are wood and propane. There are some stark differences to both types so you want to make sure you go with what works best for your needs and lifestyle.

Wood Firepit with grill

Wood:

Wood provides the most heat of any kind of fire pit. The smell of the wood and the snap, crackle and pop of burning embers is irresistible when around an open fire. Wood also gives you the option of being able to cook on the fire. Wood fire pits take longer to start and longer to burn down, but the upside surely outweighs the downside when you consider the entertainment and relaxation value of a mesmerizing wood burning fire pit.

Propane Firepit

Propane:

Propane fire pits biggest advantage is that they are quick to start and quick to shut off. They are also clean and low maintenance. Propane fire pits don’t give off as much heat as a wood burning pit. Also, you can not cook on a propane fire pit but many homeowners are finding the ease of use is a big advantage.

Tree Stump Firepit

Style:

When adding a fire feature to your backyard, how simple or elaborate you go is completely up to you and your budget. On the simple end you can buy a chimenea at a big box store and place it on your deck. On the more expensive end of the spectrum is to build a stone fire pit with custom seating. The beauty of having your fire pit custom built is that it can be designed to be any shape and size you like, and as basic or elaborate as you like. Here at Backyard Vision we can accommodate any kind of firepit, from a simple stone block firepit to a custom built firepit with paver or slate patio, to the tree stump firepit shown above.

Cost:

As mentioned above, fire pits can be simple, elaborate and everywhere in between. As such the cost will vary based on size and materials needed. A chimenea may only cost $100 but it most likely will only last a year before it starts cracking; where as a custom built fire pit will last for years to come. A basic, well built custom fire pit could cost as little as $500 and give you hours of relaxation and enjoyment.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To Install A Pool?

The answer is Winter and Fall. The end of summer and into the Fall months are easily the best time of year to install a swimming pool.

The reasons are pretty simple. For one the weather starts to cool off making for better working conditions for the installers.

A second reason is a “stress free installation”. The swim season is over so there is no pressure of “upcoming party” time lines that need to be met and the kids aren’t asking every day “can we swim yet?” Also if an unforeseen delay pops up it can be handled in a timely and stress free manner.

Another reason is that fall is a great time to plant. Pool installations wreak havoc on a backyard so installing in the Fall gives you plenty of time to get your yard back in shape in plenty of time before Spring and swim season.

A fourth reason is that some pool manufacturers and installers give Fall & Winter discounts which offers the homeowner a chance to save a few bucks.

One last reason is that most pool manufacturers raise prices at the beginning of the new year and this gives the homeowner another way to save  some money.

Granted the one drawback is that you won’t get to use the pool right away but if you can get past that one fact the Fall is clearly the best time to have a swimming pool installed in your backyard.
